CityWest Homes, the housing organisation managing Westminster City Council’s homes, decided now was the time to carry out a major refurbishment on the six 21 floor tower blocks on these two estates that have been a landmark north of Paddington Station for over four decades.

Being ‘general housing stock’ for one of London’s most diversified boroughs, some time was spent over the appropriate level of resilience and appearance of these lifts. The private leaseholders in the buildings wished for something different to normal ‘council lift cars’ with the ubiquitous ‘5WL’ patterned stainless steel, eg plastic laminate and carpet, however the probability of a high level of misuse and vandalism was accepted and a more aesthetically acceptable but sufficiently resilient pattern was the compromise. The opportunity was also taken of utilising the whole of the available lift wells and increasing the size of the original lifts.
Despite the challenges of working in populated buildings with the lifts being used by other trades, the ‘new’ lifts look and perform substantially better than the old ones.
